Red Cross to provide, install smoke detectors in Weissport

Weissport could be the next town on the American Red Cross' list to be canvassed for a residential smoke detector need assessment.

Joe Flickinger, of the Lehighton Fire Department, visited the Weissport Borough Council meeting Monday night to tell borough officials the canvassing will likely take place on Sept. 30 with the smoke detector installation following on Oct. 2.Volunteers will go door to door asking residents if they would like smoke detectors, which come at no cost to them, and how many they want to be installed."We've done this in the fall and in the spring in Lehighton, and Weissport is just as important to us," Flickinger said. "We put in over 200 smoke detectors during those canvasses. The detectors have a 10-year lithium ion battery and would cost $25-$30 if you got them in the store."The goal of the program is to cut down on deadly fires, according to the Red Cross.Flickinger said around 20-30 volunteers helped install the detectors and educate residents about fire safety in Lehighton.Volunteers will be treated to pizza after completing their installations. In other businessIn an action item Monday night, Weissport's council voted to purchase a new commercial weed whacker for $300.Council member Arland Moyer said the one the borough currently uses has been in for repair several times and he has had trouble keeping it running.
