Man dies in Franklin Twp. fire

An elderly Franklin Township man who was rescued from his home when it erupted in flames Friday evening has died of injuries sustained in the blaze.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott M. Grim said William Evans, 80, of 90 Rock St., Lehighton, died at 8:46 p.m. at the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he was flown by medical helicopter.Grim said Evans died of thermal and inhalation injuries and ruled the manner of death an accident.The fire was reported about 7:15 p.m. with five fire companies from Carbon County responding. The residence is located behind the Hampton Inn.Firefighters got Evans out of the home quickly upon arrival. CPR was performed on Evans until medical personnel arrived. He was initially treated at the Lehighton hospital before being flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital.Fire companies responding to assist Franklin Township Fire Company were volunteers from Lehighton, Mahoning Valley, Bowmanstown, Parryville and Towamensing Township.A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
