Relay team from 2010 set records

In 2010, four female track athletes from Jim Thorpe competed in the 4x100 relay at the District 11 Class 2A Track and Field Championships.

They were JaAshia Paige, Ashley Nicola, Amelia Herman and Hilary Reis.Paige and Nicola had been members of the 4x100 relay that had won in 2008 and 2009 and were trying to win their third district relay championship in a row.Amelia Herman was an alternate on the 2008 relay team, and Hilary Reis had not run in the relay with them before. This would be the first time that the four girls would enter the event together.The Jim Thorpe relay, with two new members, would not only win their third straight district championship but they did it in record-breaking fashion finishing with a time of 49.74, which is still an all-time Schuylkill League record. They also set a new District 11 record that year, but it was broken in 2012 by .01 of a second.Two of the girls, Reis and Paige, went on to earn individual medals in the state championships. Reis earned a seventh place medal in the high jump and Paige also earned a seventh place medal in the triple jump.After high school, the four girls went on to college and all finished with degrees.Paige graduated from Penn State with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies and a minor in Kinesiology. She is currently employed as a physical therapist at Therapeutic Solutions Physical Therapy in Merrill, New York.Herman graduated from Albright College in 2015 with a B.S. in Communications and is employed at Software House International in Somerset, New Jersey.Reis graduated from Moravian College with a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science and is employed at the Delaware Claims Processing Facility in Wilmington, Delaware.And Nicola graduated from Shippensburg in 2015 with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. She works as a counselor in the Abraxas Leadership Development Program in South Mountain, PA.The 27th annual Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame Banquet will be held at the Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall on Saturday, Aug. 20.A cocktail hour will begin at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., and the induction ceremony will start at 7:15 p.m.Entertainment will begin at the conclusion of the induction ceremony, which will be at approximately 8:30 p.m. The cost will be $35 per person and includes dinner, selected drinks and entertainment.In the next few weeks leading up to the banquet, the Times News will also publish the accomplishments of the other four inductees: Matt Long, Julie Romanisko, Jim Maehrer and the 2006 Jim Thorpe undefeated tennis team.Tickets for the induction ceremony and the rest of the evening can be obtained by calling Jack Kmetz at 570-325-4923, or Wilmer Redline at 570-325-3073.
