Road work continues in Lower Towamensing Twp.

Two roads are left to be resurfaced in Lower Towamensing Township. Third Street and Sand Quarry Road, which were not part of the original roadwork plan, were added when the township discovered that Palmerton is resurfacing them in the borough.

The work will be done by Livengood Excavators in Walnutport, which was contracted in May to put down an asphalt overlay on four streets in the township. Those streets are:• Hemlock Street (from Spring Road to Dairy Road) - less than a mile section;• Hemlock Street (from Dairy Road to the township line) - about a half-mile section;• Locust Drive (from 57 Road to the township line) - about a quarter-mile section, and;• Hill Road (from Hickory Lane to the township line) - about a quarter-mile section.Various locations on Walnut Drive between Hahns Dairy Road and Drift Road needed subbase repairs in spots, but didn't need the more extensive asphalt overlay across the width of the roadway.Livengood's bid of $292,282.54 was accepted over two other companies. Subbase repairs were done by cutting away and removing broken pavement, then an asphalt overlay was applied."I think Livengood did a very fine job," said Ronald Walbert, chairman of the township supervisors. "In my opinion, they were very timely.""They did an excellent job," said Charlie Shupp, roadmaster for Lower Towamensing. In addition to the work in Lower Towamensing, Livengood is handling the road work paving project in Palmerton. Work on Third Street and Sand Quarry Road in the township will be completed after the Palmerton section is done, Shupp said. He expects the work to begin later in the summer or September.Livengood will be applying blacktop over the full width of Third Street and Sand Quarry, Shupp said, just like it is doing with the other roads. On Third Street, they will pave about 480 feet that lies within the township. About 1,000 feet of Sand Quarry will be paved. The township also awarded chip and seal work. The lowest bid of $66,627.48 came from Asphalt Maintenance Solutions LLC in Emmaus. This project involved applying a single bituminous seal coat with a mixture of a polymer and stone. The roadways that were worked on include:• Walnut Drive (from Hahns Dairy Road to the township line) - about a 2-mile section;• Hickory Road (from Walnut Drive to the township line) - about a quarter-mile section;• 57 Road (from Little Gap Road to the township line) - a little more than a mile section; and• Wintergreen Road (starting a little north of Hahns Dairy Road) - the section will stretch about a quarter mile.In other business, a resident asked the supervisors if they are permitted to put tires in the garbage collection. The other company used to take them for free, he said.Township secretary and treasurer Christine Wentz said residents can put out tires, but it will cost them $5 per tire.Walbert said the former garbage collector was supposed to charge a fee per tire, because it costs the garbage hauler to dispose of the tires.Supervisor Brent Green said he is concerned that some residents are not using the garbage cans provided. They are putting out more garbage than they are supposed to. The cans provided will hold three large garbage bags or multiple smaller bags.He also noticed that some bulk items are not being picked up. There are two different phone numbers on the cans for people call to complain.Wentz said whenever she gets a complaint about bulk items left sitting, she gives the resident the phone number of the man in charge of the local site of the garbage company. The head of the branch told her to give out his phone number. So far, issues seem to be getting resolved, she said.
