Progressive bluegrass coming to opera house

Three members of the band Railroad Earth have joined together with a former RRE member on a progressive bluegrass-oriented band, The Shockenaw Mountain Boys, and will perform at the Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe at 8 p.m. Friday.

They will share the bill with the Bovine Social Club. The Shockenaw Mountain Boys are an acoustic subset of Railroad Earth that performs high-energy versions of Irish tunes, bluegrass standards and various original tunes.Bred on the northern banks of the Delaware River, Bovine Social Club, produced by Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone, features a sound fertilized by Celtic, bluegrass, old-time, juju, gospel, jazz and rock.“I produced Bovine Social Club’s first record this past year and they have come a long way. They’re gaining fans and good reviews and it’s well-deserved. Samuel St. Thomas is a great lyricist and the band frames his songs perfectly,” Carbone said. Many words describe various aspects of Tim Carbone, but none capture the sweeping breadth of talent he embodies.John Skehan is a classically trained piano player whose mando style often reflects this pianistic, textural style. Andy Goessling, known as “the right brain of Railroad Earth,” gets back to his bluegrass roots with the guitar, mando and banjo. Johnny Grubb is the renaissance man.Together, the Shockenaw Boys and Bovine Social Club make great music. What’s coming up next• 8 p.m., July 9, Dancing Dream — The ABBA Experience• 8 p.m., July 15, Willy Porter with Carmen Nickerson• 8 p.m., July 16, Incendio• 8 p.m., July 21, Blue Sisters• 8 p.m., July 22, The Bird Dogs• 8 p.m., July 23, Craig Thatcher’s “Akustiko Band.” This is a fundraiser for the opera house.• 8 p.m., July 24, 40 Story Radio Tower with musical guest The Big Fat Meanies• 8 p.m., July 30, Bennie and the JetsTickets are available at the opera house website,
