Former county resident gets state term for drugs, theft

A former Carbon County resident was sentenced to a state prison term on Tuesday afternoon after pleading guilty in three pending cases involving drugs and theft.

Nicholas Eternity Carullo, 23, of Pittsburgh, and formerly of Palmerton, pleaded guilty before Judge Steven R. Serfass to one count each of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft.Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced him to serve a total of six to 12 months in the county prison and consecutive to a state prison term of six to 24 months he is serving on a sentence imposed in Lehigh County. Since the terms run consecutive it resulted in Serfass' sentence becoming a state term for Carullo.Serfass rejected a request to run the sentence concurrent with Lehigh stating he had to consider the "gravity of the offense and its effect on the general public."Carullo was arrested on Feb. 23 by Palmerton police and charged with taking a tip jar at the Hunan House restaurant, at 493 Delaware Ave. The jar contained an estimated $50. He was charged for a March 3 incident in the area of 140 Delaware Ave. where police sought him out for questioning in another matter. Methamphetamine residue was found in a backpack he was wearing. The third arrest occurred on March 18 by Palmerton police in the area 346 Delaware Ave. when police served a warrant on him and found drug paraphernalia. In addition to the prison term Serfass ordered Carullo to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000 and render 25 hours of community service when released on parole.
