Palmerton shows off classics and clunkers in car show

The annual Palmerton Car Show featured a large number of antique, classic and new cars, souped-up trucks, hot rod boats, a restored classic police car and even an old demolition car that had seen better days.

More than 250 vehicles of all varieties were entered into the show, which was held at the Palmerton Borough Park. The show, hosted by the PACE-Makers Association, began in 1998."We doubled our entries this year from last year," said Andrew Cordell, president of the club for 15 years. "This is a fun show and our judges are members of the Palmerton Community."Twenty-five awards were handed out during the show in various categories.JP and Company played music and the band Old Friends performed later in the afternoon."We love old cars," said Jeanette Bocher of Lehighton. "When my husband (Chris) retired this turned into his hobby."They had entered their 1948 Chevy Coupe in the show. The husband and wife team enter about seven shows a year. The furthest they have driven their car to participate in a show is Ocean City, Maryland."We get a lot of thumbs-up when people past us on the interstates," Bocher said. The oldest car award went to Al Grochowski of Northampton with his rare 1924 Jewett Six four-door sedan. His car was all original with 13,000 miles. The car was built by the Paige Motor Company in Detroit. It was delivered to Bethlehem. The car was put into a storage barn in 1944 and was found in 2010 by Grochowski. There is only one other original one in the country."I bought this kind of sight unseen. We were not sure what we were getting. It had been is storage for so many years. The first thing I did was honk the horn and it worked. Then we cranked it up and started right off. I just couldn't believe it," Grochowski said.Just one of the many PACE-Makers Car Club members Harriet Visnosky of Palmerton had her white convertible 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix on display. Visnosky had been a member on and off with the club since the 1950s."I was brought up with cars. My dad was the owner of Sander Super Service on Delaware Avenue in Palmerton since 1953. I got to love cars from my dad. This car here is one of his favorites," Visnosky said.WinnersThe overall winners of the event were:Best Convertible: Lisa Seltzer, 1972 Pontiac Lemans SportBoy's Choice, ages 13 to 16: William Shook, 1955 Chevrolet 210 SedanGirl's Choice, ages 13 to 16: Buell Ruch, 2003 CorvetteBest Paint Job: Ernest Miller, 1933 Chevrolet Street RodBest Pickup Truck: Rodger Smith, 1955 Chevrolet 3100Best Graphics: Matt Lipics, 2000 Chevrolet CamaroBest Street Rod: Chuck Grover, 1941 WillysBorough Council Choice: Bob Antonioli, 1956 Ford Thunderbird.Mayor's Choice: Rory Hahn, 1951 StudebakerBest Grocery Getter: Don Silfes, 1960 Chevrolet ImpalaHighest 4x4 Truck (Ground to highest part of cab): Mike Deflaco, 2005 Chevrolet 2500HDBest Motorcycle: Scott Schenkel, 2001 Harley Davidson Road King.Best Rat Rod: Keith Rapchak, 1937 Mack FiretruckFurthest Driven: Vince Szacko, 1993 Ford Mustang (89 miles)Best Getaway Car: Stan Ruch, 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1Best Engine: Ernest Miller, 1933 Chevy Street RodBest Interior: Mark Goff, 1967 Chevrolet NovaBest Tuner Car (Foreign or Domestic): Teddy Kistler, 2008 Saturn SkyBest "Under Construction": Chris GroverBest Pro Street: Ed Bauer, 1968 Chevrolet ChevelleBest Muscle Car: Todd Kriner, 1970 Dodge SuperbeeBest Corvette: Bruce Kemmerer, 1966 Chevrolet StingrayBest Late Model (2000 and Up): Ron Frey, 2009 Dodge ChallengerPace-Makers Association Award for the Most Vehicles by One Club: Tamaqua Street MachinesOldest Vehicle: Nathan Holberg, 1916 BuickAll proceeds of the car show benefit the area youth recreational and sport organizations.
