Stolen phone brings charges in Tamaqua

A 27-year-old man showed his gratitude for being given a ride by stealing the motorist's cellphone.

According to police, John Smith II, last known address 110 Market St., Tamaqua, asked a Tamaqua resident for a ride to Walmart on June 14.The resident and his wife obliged. Smith then asked to use their cellphone and the couple let him use it.While Smith was talking on the phone he asked the couple to drop him off at the mountain spring on Old Route 209, where he jumped out of the car, entered a white car and left with the cellphone.The couple tried calling and texting the number numerous times, according to the police report, and Smith failed to respond. The Verizon phone is valued at $100. Smith will answer to charges of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.
