Florida company to continue providing prison food

A Florida-based company that provides prison food in Carbon County will likely continue its operation in the future.

Last week, the commissioners opened the sole bid for food services at the correctional facility in Nesquehoning.Trinity Services Group Inc. of Oldsmar submitted a bid for the three-year contract totaling $909,264. The bid is based on serving meals to 228 inmates three times a day.It breaks down to $1.29 per meal for the first year, $1.329 per meal for the second year and $1.369 per meal for the third year.Carbon County is currently in the last year of its three-year contract with Trinity, which took over prison food operations in August 2013 after the county looked at outsourcing the kitchen service rather than hosting it in-house.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that during the prebid meeting, four or five vendors showed interest in the contract but never submitted a bid.Commissioner William O'Gurek said that the contract is a good one based on the figures. The county pays $1.406 a meal under the current contract based on 188 inmates, which the county housed when the contract was signed three-years ago.In 2012, the county was paying $1.88 per meal and spending over $1 million annually on food service at the prison."Trinity has done us well," O'Gurek said. The county then tabled the bid so it could be inspected to make sure it meets all requirements. It will be either approved or rejected at the commissioners' June 30 meeting. In other prison matters, the commissioners voted to ratify the submission of the Justice Assistance Grant local jurisdiction waiver in conjunction with the grant application to support the startup of the Carbon County Re-entry plan and programs, which have been in the planning process since last September.Pinebrook Family Answers of Allentown prepared the application.Last month, the county prison board approve submitting a letter of support for the application.
