Bombers fall in quarters

FREDERICKSBURG - Throughout the postseason, the Palmerton baseball team has found a way to win.

With dramatic rallies as their calling card, the Blue Bombers captured their first-ever District 11 championship to earn a spot in the PIAA Class AAA Tournament, where they staged another comeback to earn a first round win Monday over Palmyra. But the run ended in the quarterfinals Thursday against Susquehanna Township, as Palmerton's season came to an end with a 10-0 loss in six innings. The Indians (18-8) got a stellar pitching performance from starter Dan Warshawsky, who struck out 13 and allowed just three hits in six innings of work."He's a power pitcher," Palmerton head coach Mike Svetik said of Warshawsky. "We didn't think he was really doing anything special; there wasn't a lot of movement. We took a lot of pitches early in the count and got behind."You're not going to win a game with 13 strikeouts. You're not. I don't care what you do. You have to come out there and put the ball in play and we didn't."Susquehanna, the No. 3 team coming out of District 3, gave Warshawsky plenty of run support, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Jacoby Pate. The runs came after the Blue Bombers (15-11) had two hits in the top half of the inning. Toby Sander smoked a one-out double, but was thrown out trying to make it to third base. Kole Rodrigues followed with a single, but was left stranded after Warshawsky recorded his fifth punch out to end the inning and the threat.Palmerton collected just one hit the rest of the way - another single by Rodrigues in the fifth inning - as the Indians surged ahead.Susquehanna added another run in the bottom of the third, followed by three in both the fifth and sixth innings, to invoke the mercy rule and end the game.Despite facing an early deficit, Svetik still felt like his team could come back, just like it has so many times before during the postseason."If you watched the whole game, our kids never quit," said Svetik. "You could have walked in here, not seen the scoreboard … and thought it was a 1-0 game. That's what I'm so proud of. They went out there and they didn't quit. They didn't quit all season."That's why we got here - because there's no quit in this group of kids."The Blue Bombers used that resolve to stage an epic postseason run that started with a 1-0 win over Allentown Central Catholic in the first round of the district tournament. They followed that with a seventh-inning rally to stun Tamaqua in the district semifinals. The Blue Bombers did it again in spectacular fashion to win the district title, rallying to beat Lehighton 12-11 after trailing 7-1 earlier in the game. The magic continued in the first round of the PIAA playoffs against District 3 runner-up Palmyra as Palmerton again dug out of a 3-0 hole to claim a 7-6 win, the school's first in the state tournament.Knowing what the Blue Bombers were capable of, Susquehanna head coach Rob Martin reminded his team that no lead was safe."You've got to battle until the last out," Martin noted. "Midway through the game, I pulled them in and told them that these guys (Palmerton) are comfortable being behind - we can't let up and we have to keep going on the attack, and that's what we did."While the Blue Bombers' season came to an end Thursday afternoon at Wenger Field, the memories the team created will last forever."It was insane," said senior Zach Buck. "It was a great ride with a bunch of good guys and I wouldn't want to do it with any other team."Though disappointed, junior Garrett Perschy, who had the game-winning hit in the district championship game against Lehighton, tried to put the loss in perspective while keeping an eye toward the future."For these seniors, it's going to be hard for them to get over this loss," said Perschy "But I'm trying to tell them that we made history at our school this year."The camaraderie we had this year was just absolutely incredible. This experience and knowing how to get here now is definitely going to help this team. We're going to be a young team next year, and this is somewhere we'll want to be again."REDEMPTION. … Wenger Field was a familiar site for Susquehanna, which suffered a 9-3 loss in eight innings to Hamburg in the District 3 semifinals on May 31.ON THE HORIZON. … The Indians will get District 2 champion North Pocono in the PIAA semifinals on Monday.Palmerton 000 000 x - 0 3 2Susquehanna 031 033 x - 10 13 0Buck, Perschy (4) and Mooney; Warshawsky and Pae.
