At the past two meetings of Weissport Borough Council, the minutes were taken by the town's solicitor Michael Greek.

That's because the borough presently doesn't have a secretary/treasurer and has nobody in mind for the position.Jillyann Sterling, who served as the part-time secretary/treasurer for the past several years, said in April that she found employment elsewhere and will continue helping the borough until it finds a replacement. She hasn't attended the past three meetings of the council and has cut back on the amount of hours she helps in the borough, the council said. The council had placed an ad in the Times News last month for a secretary/treasurer and received four applicants. One was interviewed and set to be hired, but a day later told the council she was no longer interested.Anyone interested in serving as the secretary/treasurer should send a letter to council President Gene Kershner in care of the borough hall.In other business• The council will advertise to amend its burning ordinance so that it can be better enforced. The ordinance presently says only the police can enforce it.The amended ordinance will allow anyone designated by the council to enforce it.The council said it will authorize Constable James Osbourne to be the enforcer and check on outdoor burning containers and other ordinance components.Osbourne said he will help the borough at no cost to the borough."I'm your constable and I'm offering my services for free," he said. "I'm your constable. Use me."• Council member Brenda Leiby was given permission to look into obtaining minimum-security prison inmates to work for the borough.• Derek Kresge was hired as a summer worker on an as-needed basis at the same rate of pay he received last year.• Councilman Arland Moyer was complimented for work he does for the borough. The project is occurring as a result of a grant. Two picnic tables and two benches also will be added.• Councilman Greg May urged that an engineer be contacted to look into a recurring water drainage problem on Bridge Street. He said large areas of water accumulate at a location on White and Bridge Street and on Allen and Bridge Street. He said the problem has gotten worse since handicapped accessible ramps were installed.May said Pennsylvania Department of Transportation refuses to do anything about the situation, saying it is a borough problem. The borough feels it is a PennDOT situation.• The council agreed to give its annual donations of $100 each to the Lehighton Area Memorial Library and the Lehighton United Veterans Organization.• Kershner said the Carbon County Council of Governments is planning an auction of surplus municipal items on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the East Penn Social Hall. He said 17 governments are members of the council. School districts also will be invited to sell items, he said. The auction will be run by Hauser Auctioneers, providing there is enough interest shown by the municipalities.Several council members indicated Weissport will participate if it is held.• Kershner said illegal dumping is occurring along the Lehigh Canal in the area of Long Run, Franklin Township. The borough owns a parcel that is locked but has been opened to allow people to go to the canal to fish.
