Hendrick dominance at Pocono is wavering

It's no secret that Hendrick Motorsports has dominated at Pocono International Raceway as of late. In fact, Hendrick powered cars have won seven out of the last 10 races at "the Tricky Triangle."

However, qualifying on Friday proved that Hendrick is not the fastest team on the block this time around. Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano pulled the Penske sweep on the front row, while Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth qualified third and fifth. The lone Hendrick powered car belonged to Stewart-Haas Racing's Kevin Harvick. Hendrick supplies SHR with engines, cars, and technical support. Most would agree Joe Gibbs Racing has now surpassed Hendrick in week to week consistency. The proof is certainly in the amount of wins with JGR having seven and Hendrick just two, which are both from six-time champion Jimmie Johnson.JGR will certainly be looking to continue its success at Pocono from last August's race when Matt Kenseth won a crazy fuel mileage race that saw a lot of drivers run out of gas in front of him.The story on Friday however, was the speed of the Penske cars. It might not be realized because of Hendrick's recent success, but two out of the last ten wins since 2011 at Pocono have come from Team Penske drivers. Brad Keselowski in the August 2011 race and Joey Logano in the June 2012 race, although Logano was running for JGR at the time. One thing is for sure for Sunday's Axalta 'We Paint Winners' 400 and that is Hendrick will have plenty of competition and the competition might just be faster. That is something Hendrick Motorsports has not been used to at Pocono.**********TRUEX JR. LOOKING TO GO BACK-TO-BACK ... Martin Truex Jr. is not only looking for his second consecutive Pocono June win, but he's also striving for his second consecutive overall victory after winning the Coca-Cola 600 a week ago at Charlotte.Truex was strong a week ago and, according to nascarmedia.com, his 588 miles led were the most in NASCAR history. Truex, who is a nearby New Jersey native has been pretty solid at Pocono. He has one win, three top fives, seven top 10s and an average finish of 15.3. Truex will start 17th on Sunday.**********DALE EARNHARDT JR. LOOKING FOR FIRST WIN ... Pocono could be just what the doctor ordered for Dale Earnhardt Jr. this season. This is because Pocono has been kind to him over the last two seasons. He won both races at Pocono in 2014 and finished 11th and fourth respectively in 2015.Earnhardt Jr. has finished runner-up three times this season, so there's no doubt that he's due. However, in his last six races he's only finished in the top 10 once, which was a third place finish at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star race at Charlotte. Earnhardt Jr. will undoubtedly have a competitive car on Sunday, but can he get past his recent struggles and put together a quality effort at "the Tricky Triangle?" That's the question for the No. 88 group. He will roll off eighth on Sunday.**********HAMLIN LOOKING TO GET BACK IN VICTORY LANE AT POCONO ... Before Pocono was repaved a few years ago, Denny Hamlin wan the man to beat. Hamlin leads all active drivers with four wins at the track, but has struggled since the track was resurfaced. Hamlin completed the sweep at Pocono in 2006 and also won races in 2009 and 2010.Hamlin has nine top fives and 13 top 10s in 20 starts at Pocono. He will start 10th on Sunday.**********OTHER DRIVERS TO WATCH ... Tony Stewart - Stewart put together a quality qualifying effort. He will start sixth for Sunday's race. A win for Stewart could do wonders for his chase chances. He has two career victories at the track in 2003 and 2009; Chase Elliott - Pocono has never been known to be kind to rookies, but Chase Elliott has shown the ability to perform consistently week in and week out. He has nine top 10 finishes this season and if he can perform well at Pocono on Sunday it just further proves he's next superstar in NASCAR. Elliot will start 14th on Sunday; Jimmie Johnson - You can't ever count six time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson. Johnson has three career wins at Pocono and is always in the mix late in the race. Johnson will start seventh on Sunday.
