Lehighton phone scam reported

Lehighton residents should be on the watch for a telephone scam.

One of the borough's electric customers received a phone call Thursday that his power was going to be shut off in 30 minutes, and was told they wanted money from him, according to borough Manager Nicole Beckett.Beckett said the resident contacted her, and she, in turn, called the phone number that was given to the customer."It was definitely a scam," said Beckett, who noted that the borough runs its own electrical utility. "If the borough was going to do any kind of notification or turnoff, the borough would notify (its customers)."Beckett said that if anyone receives a similar phone call, they should contact the borough police department at 610-377-4003.
