2016 Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame Class is announced

Two outstanding athletes, a long time cheerleading coach, a District 11 champion relay squad, and a undefeated boys tennis team comprise the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016.

The class is comprised of:Jim Maehrer graduated in 1958 as a three-sport athlete and valedictorian of his class. He received a total of eight varsity letters in three sports (football, baseball and basketball). In 2006, he was inducted into the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame along with other members of the 1957 basketball team.Matt Long graduated in 2001 as a three-sport athlete who finished in the top five in his class. He received 10 varsity letters in three sports (baseball, basketball and football). He set several school records in both football and baseball. At Muhlenberg College, he was a four-year starter in baseball..Julie Romanisko graduated in 1988, went on to Penn State University and graduated in 1994 with a BA in Psychology, and a MS in Couselor Education. For the past 27 years, she has coached cheerleading at Jim Thorpe, starting as an assistant coach in 1989 and taking over the head coach position in 2010.The 2010 girls 400 meter relay team of Amelia Herman, Ashley Nicola, Hilary Reis and JaAshia Paige broke the District 11 record with a time of 49.74 seconds. Paige and Nicola were members of three consecutive District 11 Class AA championship relay teams (2008-2009-2010). Herman was an alternate for the 2008 team. Reis and Paige both went on to win PIAA state track and field individual medals. Reis in the high jump and Paige in the triple jump.The 2006 tennis team was the first and only undefeated regular season tennis team in school history. The team went 12-0 during the regular season. In the District 11 tournament, they beat Blue Mountain in the quarterfinals before falling to Southern Lehigh in the semifinals. Team members were Wes Farra, Mike Castro, Brandon Lux, Ben Flizack, Brandon Dunbar, Nate White, Kyle Parrish, Jared Smith, Gerard Barile, Ryan Fritzinger, Roberto Faust, Dave Williams, Tristan Bleicher-Otto, Nick Williams, Christ Kazantzidis, Sean Maloney and Joel Baier. The managers were Sam Lux, Allie Klotz and Tiffany Klotz. The head coach was Norb Lienhard and his assistant was Fred Maloney.
