Pleasant Valley awards presented

With the end of the school year approaching, a number of awards were presented and good news was shared at the Pleasant Valley School Board meeting Thursday night.

Ray Williams, president of the Monroe chapter of Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, was on hand to present several awards to district employees.The Loretta Woodson award was given to Valerie Rudawski, dean of students at Pleasant Valley Elementary for her hard work with the students, staff and families of Pleasant Valley Elementary.Linda Moschella was recognized with the Loretta Woodson award for support personnel for the fine job that she does at the middle school.PASR also gave $100 grants to five teachers: Dr. Lee Lesisko of the PV Cyber Academy; George Boudman, an art teacher at the high school; Amy Winsock, a special-education teacher at the high school; Michelle Herrmann who teaches at Pleasant Valley Elementary; and James Igoe, who teaches at the middle school.Middle school Principal Rocco Seiler and members of his staff gave the board of directors a presentation on the successful mini-Thon earlier this year. The several-week event culminated on Feb. 19, raising over $13,000 for the Four Diamonds fund to research childhood cancers.Elementary Principal Erica Greer told the board that the PTO had generously donated $3,500 toward the purchase of 30 Google Books and an additional $5,000 in classroom grants to various teachers, departments and programs for the upcoming school year.High school Principal John Gress introduced this year's valedictorian, Mary Cerbone, who will be attending West Point after graduation, and salutatorian Drake Wilson, who will be attending Drexel University in the fall.Wilson and Cerbone both thanked each other for pushing the other to succeed. Cerbone also thanked the directors for allowing the school to have an extensive selection of Advanced Placement courses for students."Only 9 percent of the students that apply to West Point get accepted," Cerbone said. "By seeing that I had these courses and that I was able to pass those tests showed them that I am ready. Thank you for giving me a great education."Cerbone will be studying international relations with an eye on the intelligence field. Cerbone will also continue her swimming career at West Point.Wilson will be studying mechanical engineering at Drexel in an accelerated program.Four students at the high school received 2016 Singer Scholarships as well. Abigail McLaughlin, Benjamin Estrella, Matthew Dimmick and Lindsay Shay will each receive $30,000 toward their education.
