Nesquehoning has been cracking down on ATVs in the borough.
Last month, borough officials spoke out about a recent influx of ATVs and dirt bikes coming into the borough to go off-roading. Some have been creating problems, including shooting off firearms within the borough limits.Earlier this month, Mayor Sam Kitchko, during the borough council workshop, said that following council's discussion in April, an impromptu meeting between himself, councilwoman Mary Fox, John Kovatch IV and dozens of ATV riders from as far away as Scranton and Philadelphia who use land owned by the Kovatch family was very productive.Kitchko said that the riders said they plan to try to form a club.On Wednesday, Kitchko said that there has been progress and was pleased by the response of these people.A dumpster at a popular ATV parking area just off Route 54 at the base of the mountain was brought in by the riders, and Kitchko said he has seen several areas on the mountain that the riders have been cleaning up."There are some good people using our mountains," he told council. But, Kitchko said, there have also been several complaints of local residents riding ATVs and dirt bikes on borough streets, which is prohibited. He reminds residents that this will not be tolerated, and if police catch people with these vehicles on borough streets, they will be fined.Nesquehoning police Chief Sean Smith last month also reminded residents that violators will have their ATV or dirt bike impounded.
