Nesquehoning tradition continues

In a respectful tradition that started when the Nesquehoning VFW charter was established in July 1946, men and women of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the United Veterans Organization gather around significant tombs and cemeteries in the borough to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in military duty.

The solemn stops began at the top of Broad Mountain where they remembered and paid their respects to Lt. Fred J. Knauf, a Michigan native who lost his life in a plane crash in the 1940s due to bad weather. They then continued on to St. John's Baptist Orthodox cemetery, St. Cyril's, the Lutheran cemetery, and St. Mary'sByzantine Catholic cemetery. The group continued to New Columbus' John F. Cerchiaro Memorial Park, the Grotto Shrine, then Gates of Heaven Cemetery, and made their last stop at the Hauto Memorial next to the Hauto Fire Department building. The honorable tradition consists of a prayer by VFW Post Chaplain Ted Dacey, a gun salute and taps by veteran Stanley Gieniec. This year they put together a "Soldier's Cross" display, a military tradition of using a standing rifle and helmet hanging from the rifle's top, at the top of the New Columbus cemetery. The boots and empty helmet signify a soldier lost in battle.
