The Lehighton Education and Athletic Foundation is announcing the first inductees into its Lehighton Area Graduates of Distinction.

Maj. Gen. Marvin Jay Barry: (1966 graduate) 1970 U.S. Air Force Academy graduate. Instructor, flight examiner, operations officer and a commander of a tactical airlift squadron. He commanded a provisional tactical airlift squadron during Operation Desert Storm, served in Vietnam, piloted more than 4,800 hours of flight time in a C-130 and a C-5 aircraft. Barry has served on the Air Force staff at the Pentagon before and after 9/11. In civilian life, he has been employed by a major air carrier as a captain. He coached youth baseball and football. He is also a member of the Carbon County Vietnam Veterans and has served on the Carbon County Conservation Board.Dr. David Dulaney: (1955 graduate) Graduated from Jefferson Medical College and was the first ophthalmologist to perform LASIK eye surgery in the United States. He was also the first to use the implant contact lens and a first of investigators to perform a procedure on the Wavelight Allegretto Laser. Dulaney's foundation provides continuing medical education to ophthalmologists. Deceased in 2013.Lori Hartman Greeley: (1978 graduate) 1982 Bucknell University Graduate; executive vice president and general merchandise manager for various categories and a member of the executive committee from 1995-2007 at Victoria's Secret. She held the position of chief executive officer of Victoria's Secret stores from 2007-2013. She has been appointed to the board of Caleres (formally known as Brown Shoe Company) and the board of New York & Company (women's apparel and accessory company). Recently, she has accepted the role of chief executive officer of Serena & Lily, a home furnishings company. Greeley is a member of the Bucknell Institute for Public Policy and is a member of the Pelotonia, which raises funds for cancer research at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.Franz Kline: (1931 graduate) An artist with a painting in every major museum in the world. Kline changed the course of art history, bringing the focus from Europe to American abstract painting. He co-founded the New York School of Arts with his fellow painters Willard De Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and others. Kline designed the Gachtin Bambil Yearbook in 1931; earned a place in the Museum of Modern Arts exhibit, which toured Europe in 1958. He has won prizes at the Biennialle in Venice and an award at the Documenta Kassel, West Germany in 1959. Mr. Kline painted the "An Artist's View of Lehighton" at the American Legion in Lehighton and his painting "Mahoning" was selected by the U.S. Postal Service to be placed on the 32-cent stamp for the American Art series. Deceased in 1962.Dr. Andrew K. Semmel: (1960 graduate) Received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He joined the Department of State in 2003 as deputy assistant secretary of state for nuclear nonproliferation in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. He served from 2001-2003 as the first executive director of the U.S. China Security Review Commission. Semmel has also served on the staff of U.S. Senator Richard G. Lugar from 1987-2001, as the senator's senior legislative assistant for foreign policy. He served as a professional staff member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations from 1985-1987. He is currently the executive director of the Partnership for a Secure America and is the head of AKS Consulting which focuses on issues related to nuclear nonproliferation and researches the uses of nuclear energy.James Wentz: (1948 graduate) Graduated from Kutztown State College. Wentz has been a role model for faculty, students, administrators and athletes within the Lehighton Area School District. He taught fourth and sixth grades in Lehighton schools and became the Shull-David principal in 1958. He went on to become the Director of Pupil Services, which placed him in charge of attendance, special education, gifted students, school nurses and health services. Wentz coached football for 30 years and track for 28 years at Lehighton. He volunteered as assistant coach and has been involved with UVO, PSERS, AMVETS, and he has volunteered at the Blue Mountain Health System where he has contributed many hours. Wentz has served many years on the board of the Zion UCC Church and participated in the choir and taught Sunday school.The Lehighton community was invited to nominate inductees. To be eligible, nominees must have demonstrated at least one of the following: outstanding accomplishments in his/her chosen field, commitment to community, local or worldwide recognition, and contribution to humanity and acts of service.A selection committee was composed of local business people, professionals and retired educators to review the applications.Inductees will be honored at LEAF's first Graduates of Distinction banquet at the Mahoning Valley Country Club on June 11 at 6
