PennDOT to ban left turns at 248 intersection

There will be a change to the traffic pattern made on Route 248 in Franklin Township this summer.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will be closing the median near the intersection with Route 209 and will prohibit left turns onto Union Hill Road by eastbound traffic.The plans were mentioned during a meeting of the Franklin Township supervisors on Tuesday.The supervisors said plans of the traffic pattern change are available for review in the township office along Fairyland Road during normal business hours.No specific date was given for the work to begin and it wasn't stated how long the project will take to complete.The turn onto Union Hill Road from Route 248 is about a quarter of a mile from the Route 209 intersection.In other business by the supervisors:• It was agreed to purchase a 2003 model, tri-axle dump truck from Atkinson Truck Sales in Virginia. Atkinson submitted the only bid for such a vehicle, which will cost $72,699.The supervisors said over $78,000 exists in the Liquid Fuels Account to pay for the vehicle.In the bid quotation, Atkinson said the 16-foot steel dump body is new.• Asphalt Maintenance Solutions, Emmaus, was awarded a contract to supply 54,338 square yards of bituminous seal coat to be used on several roads within the township at a price of $1.229 per square yard, or a total of $66,781.40.Shiffert's of Nazareth was the only other bidder, submitting a quote of $1.52 per square yard or a total of $82,593.76.Supervisor Robbie Cressley said the total from Asphalt Maintenance Solutions is less than last year's construction materials cost, which was $1.35 per square yard.• Various road materials will be purchased at various prices from Lehigh Asphalt Paving in Andreas.• A Permissive License Agreement was approved by the supervisors with Kendall and Brianna Hinze of 888 Main Road. The couple plans to erect a fence on their property.• Garbage collection for those residents who have Monday pickup will occur on May 31 instead of May 30 because of Memorial Day.• An ordinance was adopted allow either the supervisors or the Franklin Township Fire Chief to declare or lift a burn ban.• Franklin Township fire police were granted permission to assist with traffic control for Lehighton borough's 150th anniversary parade on July 2.• Fire Chief Lynn Diehl was given permission for the fire department to have boot drives on May 28, May 29, July 2, July 3, Sept. 3 and Sept. 4.• The Franklin Township Fire Department was granted permission to attend the Lehighton Anniversary Parade as well as the Summit Hill Memorial Day Parade.
