Man dodges traffic, punches police officer

William G. Manness, 35, whose last known address was in Tamaqua, was placed in the Schuylkill County prison on Monday after playing in traffic while high on suspected methamphetamine.

Tamaqua police received a call at 9:45 a.m. that Manness was jumping in front of cars traveling Owl Creek Road.When officers arrived Manness was in the middle of Route 309, near the Owl Creek intersection, running back and forth between moving vehicles.The officer tried to place Manness in his patrol car, but didn't receive any cooperation. He was able to get one handcuff on the man, who turned, punched the officer in the chest, broke free and began to run.Manness didn't get far as another officer had arrived blocking the road with his cruiser.Taken back to the station and lodged in the cell block, Manness began punching the walls and the cot.He was arraigned before District Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua, on charges of aggravated and simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and attempting to escape arrest.Bail was set at $10,000, which he was unable to post.
