WYOMISSING, Pa. (AP) - An eastern Pennsylvania judge has been hospitalized instead of surrendering to face charges he stole more than $113,000 from his office and the volunteer fire company where he served as treasurer.
Wyomissing District Judge Timothy Dougherty (DAWK'-er-tee) was charged Thursday with stealing more than $15,000 from his office in Berks County, which collects fines and court costs. He's also accused of taking nearly $98,000 from the Wyomissing Volunteer Fire Company.Dougherty was supposed to surrender but was instead taken to Reading Hospital from his judicial office. His condition wasn't immediately released.Dougherty doesn't have an attorney listed in court records. Nobody answered the phone at his judicial office.The state attorney general's office filed the charges, based on audits of Dougherty's office and the fire company, and interviews with Dougherty.
