Community Day all about safety, fun

Saturday may have started out rainy and damp, but the persistent showers moved out of the area just in time for the annual Community Safety Day.

The event at Mauch Chunk Lake Park provided families from around the county with a free day filled with fun, activities, lunch and prizes.Educational activities showed children how to be safe in different situations. It was organized by state Sen. John Yudichak, Carbon Lodge 242 of Free and Accepted Masons, Kid Zone Blue Mountain Health System, the Nolan Ritchie Stay Afloat Foundation and the Carbon County Commissioners.County agencies, area businesses and military branches set up displays in the park to educate families about everything from water safety, animal safety, fire safety, bicycle safety, poison control and more.St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus also manned the ever-popular coconut crusher that demonstrated the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle. The Masons, as well as two clowns manned the pavilion, providing free lunches to attendees and entertainment for the children.A special donationPrizes consisted of 26 bicycles ranging from toddler to teenager sizes, a wagon donated by St. Luke's and life vests from the Nolan Ritchie Stay Afloat Foundation.Of the 26 bikes, 14 were paid for through a special $1,000 donation given to the Masons by the Jim Thorpers, a group of bicyclers who take part in the annual Irish Pub Tour De Shore from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, New Jersey.Eric D. Johnston, worshipful master of the Masons, said Walmart also contributed $75 for the purchase of the bikes. The event raises money for the Irish Pub Children's Foundation, which is dedicated to raising money for children in need and the families of fallen police officers and firefighters in the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey areas.Michael Dugan, a member of the Jim Thorpers, said that the foundation gives back money to participants if they reach a certain level in their fundraising efforts. In 2015, 66 riders from the Jim Thorpe area and beyond participated in the Irish Pub Tour de Shore and raised more than $26,000.Because of this, the organizers of the Tour de Shore sent money back to the Jim Thorpe area to be donated locally to benefit children. The group split the donation between Community Safety Day and the Carbon County Special Olympics.Participating agencies included Rep. Doyle Heffley's office, the SHINE Afterschool Program, Pathstone Head Start, Blue Mountain Health System, Right From The Start, Carbon County Emergency Management Agency, the County Animal Response Team and the Community Emergency Response Team.Other participants included Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission, Family Promise, Carbon County Children's Team, Pennsylvania State Police, American Red Cross, Penn State Master Gardeners, New York Life, the Nolan Ritchie Staying Afloat Foundation, St. Luke's, Radio Station WMGH, the PA Fish and Boat Commission, Pre-K Counts, Carbon County Amateur Radio Club, the Pyramid, Carbon County Action Committee, Friends of Beltzville State Park, CareNet of Carbon County and Turn To Us.Volunteer fire companies from Mahoning Valley, Summit Hill, Lehigh and Lausanne, Jim Thorpe Fairview and East Side, Nesquehoning, Franklin Township, Tresckow and Albrightsville also showed off their apparatus, taught children about fire extinguishers and escaping smoke-filled buildings.Medical helicopters from St. Luke's University Health Network and Lehigh Valley Health Network were also scheduled for the event.
