Palmerton man jailed on drug charges

A Palmerton man who jumped out of his bedroom window and fled from police faces drug charges following his arrest in April.

Police were called to the Lehigh Avenue home of Dylan Smith, 26, on April 13 to assist the Carbon County Sheriff’s Department in apprehending him on a parole warrant for his arrest.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed in district court by Palmerton Patrolman Shawn Leadbetter, Smith jumped out of a second story bedroom window and fled toward Avenue A and B.Around 2 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy located Smith in a wooded area next to Avenue B and Wieners trailer court.Smith was searched and authorities found eight packages of crystal methamphetamine, two prescription pills and $55 cash.In an interview with police, Smith admitted the packages contained crystal methamphetamine, but said the pills were prescribed to his wife and he carries them around for her.Smith, however, was unable to provide officers a current prescription.He was transported to the Carbon County Correctional Facility and charged with eight counts of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, flight to avoid apprehension, and two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.Bail was set at $10,000 cash.A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge William Kissner in Palmerton.
