Walker firemen ask for increase

Walker Township officials have been asked to raise their fire tax contribution to New England Fire Co. No. 1.

Fire company member Charles Felty asked the township's board of supervisors this week to raise the fire tax to 2 mills.Felty said the fire company faces increased expenses, such as workmen's compensation, as well as a lack of support by township residents toward fire company events.Supervisor Craig Wagner said the fire tax is currently 0.75 mills and that raising the fire tax to 2 mills would require a substantial increase from the township.Felty asked why only one-third of the fire company's expenses are being paid by the fire tax.Wagner then asked Felty to provide supervisors with a list of fundraisers held, as well as income.Supervisors Chairman Bill McMullen told Felty that the board wasn't there to fight with the fire company over money."You're asking for fire money, but you don't have a set budget," McMullen said. "You should be working on a budget for 2017."The board will discuss the wmatter at a future meeting.
