Lehighton police to buy new vehicle

Lehighton plans to buy a new vehicle for its police department.

By a unanimous measure, borough council agreed this week to buy a 2017 Ford SUV Police Utility Vehicle in the amount of $39,284 from Kovatch Ford Inc. with three-year financing.Afterward, borough police Chief Brian Biechy thanked council for the vehicle.Additionally, council agreed to accept offers for its 2006 Crown Victoria once the new vehicle arrives in September.Other actionIn other business, council:• Agreed to purchase the Distribution Protection Units replacement from ABB for its electrical system in the amount of $40,535.• Approved Kobalt payment application of $287,510 for the Colonel Jacob Weiss Park project.• Approved a change order of $1,500 for water lines to drinking fountains and hose spigots for the lower park.• Approved a land development agreement with LPN Real Estate Investments LLC, pending review, for the Corner Cone Ice Cream Stand at Eighth and Mahoning streets.• Approve proceeding with the purchase of new utility software.• Adopted an ordinance adopting articles of agreement for the Carbon County Council of Governments.• Hired Monty Szukics as part-time laborer for Public Works pending pre-employment physical and screenings.• Accepted the resignation of Randall Semmel from the borough's zoning hearing board, and announced that the borough is accepting letters of interest from residents willing to fill the seat.• Agreed to look into a draft fire inspection ordinance.• Approved the Lehighton Athletic & Education Foundation to hold a 5K Walk/Run onOct. 1.• Approved a request from state Rep. Doyle Heffley to hold a 5K on June 11.• Approved a list of Baer Memorial Pool seasonal employees.
