Spaghetti dinner raises funds for Lansford fire victims

On April 11, Nancy Whitaker lost her home on East Bertsch Street in Lansford to a fire.

Her son Braxton, a Panther Valley High School student and member of the PV Grappler Club, was sleeping in the home when the fire broke out around 9:30 p.m.Braxton said, "I heard popping sounds.Whitaker said that he didn't know at the time, but the popping was the windows in the kitchen shattering, and smoke was coming from the kitchen.The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.No one was injured, but with smoke and fire home damage, the family found itself in a predicament.Wrestling Coach Ed Kennedy; his wife, Nicky; and parents involved in the wrestling club, Sandra and Josh Rodriguez, and Gina and Justin Kern, immediately jumped in to help the family.They organized a spaghetti dinner held on Sunday at the Hilltop Community Center in Summit Hill.Many people in the community rose to the occasion and donated pasta, dinner rolls, drinks and baked goods to help with the effort.Whitaker said she's grateful for the help from the community to assist her with funds.She's relieved that her son is able to stay at his girlfriend's parents' house.Her daughter, Toñía, has also been able to stay at her friend's house.Other fundraising efforts are being led by others in the community.
