Fires destroy home, garage

Firefighters battled two fires Monday night, one in Franklin Township and one in Walnutport.

Fire destroyed a garage near Phifer's Ice Dam in Franklin Township Monday night.The fire broke out at the garage at 181 Penn St. shortly before 10 p.m. Monday.Township fire Chief Lynn Diehl said that the garage fire was fully involved when firefighters arrived.Diehl said the owner of the garage said he was working in the garage doing some grinding work, and then went into his home.The owner, Troy Bollinger, said that while inside his house, he looked out and all he saw was a ball of smoke.Diehl said the fire, considered to be accidental, took firefighters about 20 minutes to knock down.Among the items that were inside the garage were a Harley motorcycle, as well as tools and other valuable possessions, Bollinger said.Also assisting at the scene were the Lehighton Fire Department, Lehighton Ambulance, and Franklin Township Police.A family is homeless after a swift-moving fire destroyed their home in Walnutport.The fire was first reported at 7:11 p.m. near the intersection of Third and Lincoln streets.When firefighters from three counties arrived on scene, flames had consumed the rear wooden deck and rear portion of the ranch-style home.
