Fillies start, finish big to beat Panthers

Candace Olson hasn't seen things start off too well for her Panther Valley softball team in every game it played this season.

That was the case again on Monday as Marian opened with a three-run first inning. It ended up to be the last inning that turned out to be the worst, however, as the Fillies put together a seven-run fifth frame to pull away for a 13-2 Schuylkill League victory."The first inning seems to always be our worst inning," Olson said. "I have noticed that consistently this season. They scored three runs in the first inning, but that's when we had all the errors and the domino effect started. I would have loved to have scored more runs and I don't think this should have been a 10-run rule game."We did have good defense at spots, but we did have errors. When they're on though, they make the plays. But, today just wasn't our day."The Fillies took advantage of two of those Panther errors in the first. Kaitlin Kowker walked to lead off the game, stole second and then scored on a throwing error. Miranda Antiga, who reached on that error, stole second and then scored on Mackenzie Joy's RBI-triple. And then, Joy ended up scoring on her triple as a throw to third went wild and she was able to cross home plate for the third run.Two more errors initiated another three-run inning for the Fillies in the second, which was sparked by Toni Galasso's two-run single."Usually when you hit the ball hard, often times it's the fine line between whether it's a hit or an error," Marian coach Joe DeAngelo said. "But you're putting the pressure on the fielder by how hard you hit the ball and I thought we had some well hit balls today."Despite the errors, the Panthers dug deep to try and keep pace with the Fillies. While the Panthers' defense made some impressive plays over the stretch of the third and fourth innings, they were also able to push across two runs on offense. Chloe Miller accounted for both of them as she led off both innings with a walk. With the Fillies up 6-2 after four innings, three more errors for the Panthers came back to haunt them in the fifth inning. The Fillies put up enough runs to initiate a 10-run rule. After the Panthers' starting pitcher Sarah Markovich only allowed three hits up until that point, the Fillies went on to double that total and add one more after that.Galasso led the charge with two singles and an RBI, while Joy added a single and Karlee Gimeno connected for a double and an RBI. Payge Wufuss and Stephanie Lencovich recorded RBIs on sacrifices. Wufuss' was a sacrifice fly, while Lencovich's was a bunt. While things panned out in Marian's favor that day, he said it didn't come that easily regardless of the number of PV miscues."I told their coach after the game they definitely didn't show any signs of quit," DeAngelo said. "They kept battling. We didn't feel safe at all until the last out. We knew they would respond even though we did take an early lead."I think we regained that momentum in the fifth inning and didn't give it back at all."DOUBLED UP ...Both Marian and Panther Valley were able to pull off double plays during the game. The Panthers' third baseman Cassidy Ryan and first baseman Hannah Hill accounted for one, while the Fillies' pitcher Mackenzie Joy and first baseman Reese Erbe recorded the other.THE FILLIES' 1-2 PUNCH ...Mackenzie Joy and Toni Galasso bat third and fourth in the Fillies' lineup for a reason. The Fillies' duo recorded six of their team's seven hits. Joy was 3-for-4 with two singles, a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Galasso was also 3-for-4 with three singles, a run scored and three RBIs. Galasso scored two of her hits in the Fillies' seven-run fifth inning.Marian 330 07 - 13 7 1Panther Vy. 010 10 - 2 4 8Joy and Kowker; Markovich and Clouser. W - Joy. L - Markovich.
