Eight defendants who previously pleaded guilty to criminal counts were sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika in Carbon County court Thursday.

Daniel Engroff, 36, of Wilkes-Barre, was sentenced to serve four months to one year in jail on a charge of unauthorized use of an automobile.Engroff was arrested on July 23, 2013, by Franklin Township police for taking a 2004 Ford Ranger pickup without permission.He was also ordered to render 25 hours of community service when released on parole and have no contact with the victim. He was given credit for 36 days already spent in prison on the charge.Ronald J. Salamanca, 59, of Albrightsville, was sentenced to time-served (43 days) to one year in jail on a charge of simple assault.Salamanca was arrested by Kidder Township police with assaultinga woman in what police said was a neighbor's dispute. Salamanca accusedthe neighbor of poisoning his dog, which she denied. He struck her in the face twice.Salamanca told Matika, "I did act quite poorly." Matika warned Salamanca to have no contact with the victim, adding if he does, then he could spend a considerable amount of time in jail. Salamanca was also ordered to render 50 hours of community service, pay total restitution of $261.80, get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment and attend and complete anger management counseling.David L. Rauch,45, of New Tripoli was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail on a driving under the influence charge.He was arrested July 13, 2015, by Nesquehoning police.He was also fined $300, license suspended for a year, render 25 hours of community service and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.He will begin his jail term on May 6 at 3 p.m. and serve it on consecutive Fridays until the five days are completed.John Paul Bargeman,37, of Albrightsville, was placed on probation for six months on a DUI charge.He was arrested on Aug. 15, 2015, along Route 534 in Penn Forest Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test showed 0.14 BAC.He must also pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Rachel Nicole Smith,24, of Palmerton, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail on a DUI charge.She was arrested on Jan. 2, 2015, along Ashtown Drive near Mall Lane in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.She was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,000, license suspended for a year, and render 25 hours of community service. She will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. April 29.Debra Hawk,50, of Lehighton, andTiffany Rose Hawk, 25, of Weissport, were both fined $25 each on charges of harassment. The two were arrested following an incident at a residence along Bridge Street in Weissport on June 15, 2013, by state police at Lehighton following a dispute with a neighbor. Both were also ordered to make restitution to the victim of $800.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
