Proposed Jim Thorpe parking ban dies

A Main Street resident in Jim Thorpe will get to keep his parking spot after a motion to advertise an ordinance that would disallow it died for lack of a second.

Council President Greg Strubinger made a motion to advertise a parking ban "in the area of 420 Main St., east for 175 feet," but when he asked multiple times for a second, his colleagues were silent. The issue began when resident Amanda Hydro told council that Al Lasky's car, when parked on her side of the street, made it difficult for her to see when pulling out of her driveway.Police measurements show it is 108 feet from the end of the Hydro driveway to where Lasky, who owns a home across the street, parks.Lasky objected to the ordinance again Thursday, claiming he "broke no laws and violated nobody's rights."He further told council any visitors or repairmen coming to the house would have to park "downtown" if the ban was put in place. At last week's workshop meeting, Hydro told council there is plenty of room for Lasky to park the car on his side of the street and that his neighbor had even offered him a spot in front of their home.Hydro made no additional comment Thursday, noting that council had all of the information.Strubinger said he made the motion because he felt if the parking dispute couldn't be solved by the residents, then "nobody should be able to park there."Before the motion died, Councilman John McGuire said he felt that if it's a safety issue, council should do something, but if not it should take no action. No other council members commented on the matter.
