Nesquehoning fire crews battled a small brush fire Sunday evening in the area of the Hauto Valley Estates.
Nesquehoning Hose Company No. 1 Fire Chief John McArdle said the fire along the north side of the Haul Road was called in by Hauto Fire Chief David Walls around 6:30 p.m.Smoke could be seen rising from the wooded area north of Park Avenue between the intersection with Route 54 and First Avenue.Haul Road is a dirt road behind the borough that stretches from Diaz Avenue in New Columbus to the Panther Creek Cogeneration Plant. It's not typically used by traffic.McArdle said that the fire was burning over approximately 1½ acres of rocky terrain."Fast action by the Nesquehoning fire companies contained the fast-moving fire," McArdle said.Hometown and Jim Thorpe fire departments were requested, but later canceled. Nesquehoning Ambulance was on standby.McArdle said once the fire was under control just after 7 p.m., the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources crews continued with mop-up operations. This wasn't the only brush fire emergency crews in the county responded to this weekend. On Saturday, a small brush fire was reported between the Lansford Pool and Route 209.According to Lansford Fire Chief Joseph Greco, the fire burned approximately 400 square feet. The cause of the fire is under investigation.Conditions for brush fires are still ideal and McArdle reminds residents that Nesquehoning is still under a burn ban, meaning burning of any kind is prohibited at this time.Other municipalities under a burn ban, according to the most recent information available through Carbon County, include Bowmanstown, Mahoning Township, Parryville, Jim Thorpe, Penn Forest Township and Summit Hill.
