Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club said goodbye to winter with its first meeting of the spring season. Members selected a theme for the year, which will be "Potpourri." Upcoming programs will include sessions on woodworking, repurposing and craft projects. The club will also prepare for the 2016 edition of the Schuylkill County Fair and tour the Schuylkill County Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden.Other events this year will be a spring tea, a summer picnic, the anniversary dinner and a Christmas party.Each meeting will include the judging of floral arrangements, in two categories, crafted by members. First place for the March arrangement and specimen was Carol Kohn, while Mary Bridygham took second place in both categories The March theme was "spring flowers."The club meets the third Tuesday of every month in the social hall at Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley. Membership is open to anyone interested in gardening, including beginners.The annual tea will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 25, in the church social hall. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 570-467-3400 or 570-386-4783.Tamaqua seniorsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens met April 7 with 54 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session.Ruthann Feane provided the invocation "Patience." Eleanor Schmerfeld and Mary Ann McLaughlin were added to the sick list. Members were asked to keep Vern Balliet and Joan Wall in their prayers. Refreshments were served.The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St. The group is open to anyone 55 or older and the YMCA is handicap accessible.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m. Also this Sunday, the monthly service at the Hometown Nursing Center will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m.Activities for next week include: Monday, women's growth group meets at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Parables of Jesus growth group meets at 1 p.m., war room growth group meets at 6:30 p.m., Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare meets at 7 p.m.; Saturday, worship team practice at 8:30 a.m., worship leaders' practice at 9:30 a.m.Bible studyVictory in the World Ministries is conducting a Christian Outreach Ministry through a series of Bible study fellowship sessions on Wednesdays at the Tamaqua YMCA.
