Slatington plans road repairs
West Church Street in Slatington will see repairs in the upcoming months with the project being awarded to lowest bidder, Baker and Baker Paving.
The second street up for repairs, West Franklin, has been tabled until a submitted construction bid can be accepted."The county has asked us to hold off on West Franklin. The second lowest bidder is a veteran-owned business. There are procedures that may apply or give preference to the veteran-owned business," said borough solicitor Tom Anewalt."We were asked to hold off until the veterans regulations are ironed out. Under the preferences rules, veterans' businesses might get it. The borough has 60 days to wait under the bidding laws. The county will have an answer by Thursday or Friday. It's a special request.""So we have to give it to them even though it's $2,000 more than the lowest bid?" asked Councilman Jon Rinker."Yes."Two stop signs will also be added to Walnut Street in the next few weeks.A new plaque honoring former Police Chief Ted Kistler will be donated and placed on the police station. Kistler was the longest-working chief in Lehigh County history, serving from 1968 to 1998.Current Chief David Rachman reported to the council regarding the heavy Main Street bridge activity Monday afternoon."We grabbed a suspect from three armed robberies. Through technology we were able to track him to Walnutport for about a half-hour. He was found crossing the bridge into Slatington. The state, Slatington, Walnutport, Lehigh and Northampton police were there. Since it was for armed robbery we assumed he was still armed."A new committee was recognized by the board Monday night. The veterans memorial committee consists of six area men, including Chairman David Altrichter and Co-Chairman and Slatington Mayor, Walter Niedermeyer. The committee is working with the Venture Group to add a veterans memorial to the existing memorial park on Second and Main streets.According to Altrichter, the memorial will include seven flags and a memorial wall with the names of veterans who served and lost their lives during several wars including the Civil War up to Vietnam."We are working with (borough engineer) Larry Turoscy and will build the wall along the alleyway," Altrichter said. The plaque will read, "We honor your service, respect your committee and recognize your sacrifice," the chairman said. The memorial is still in the planning phase with the group hopeful to complete the project before Veterans Day.
