Several used needles found on road in Weatherly

Needles along the road are plaguing at least one Carbon County community.

Weatherly police started noticing the issue in March when they were called three times to East Main Street for used hypodermic needles lying on the side of the road.According to social media posts, officers collected 11 used needles."It is very sad that we have to say this, but, be mindful when out walking with your kids or your pets," police said in the post. "If anyone sees any needles lying on the street, call the police station so we can come remove it."Anyone with information on who is discarding the needles is also asked to call police. On March 23, officers walked East Main Street and Carbon and Evergreen avenues looking for needles, finding just one.Two days later, an East Main Street resident called police to come to their house to remove two empty heroin bags and a needle cap."The items were found in the yard where their two small children might have played," police said.Weatherly isn't alone, however, in its needle discoveries.Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joe Schatz said his department had retrieved a needle along Center Street."That is the only one we've had recently," Schatz said. "We had them in the past around the 200 and 300 blocks of Fern Street. If someone finds a needle, they shouldn't pick it up. Call us and we'll come out with the sharps container and dispose of them."
