Nesquehoning man charged with stealing landlord's guns

A Nesquehoning man suspected of stealing two World War II era firearms from his landlord faces two felony charges stemming from the incident.

Leonard Rehatchek III, 27, was preliminary arraigned Wednesday morning in front of Magisterial District Judge Casimir Kosciolek, who set bail at $200,000 straight cash.According to Nesquehoning Police Chief Sean Smith, the two rifles, valued at $500 each, belonged to Bruce Nalesnik, who rented an apartment in the 300 block of East Catawissa Street to Rehatchek and his girlfriend.Nalesnik stored the guns in a cabinet in the basement of the property.Nalesnik said that Rehatchek had been kicked out of the apartment by the girlfriend due to his drug use, according to an affidavit of probable cause, he had gone there on Jan. 7 around 5 p.m. to visit their daughter."(T)hey played with their daughter until about 7 p.m., when she wanted to go upstairs and give her a bath,” Smith wrote in the affidavit.Rehatchek said he was going outside to smoke a cigarette and make a phone call and then would be up to help. After a few minutes, she knew something was wrong and took her daughter out of the tub and went downstairs. She saw Rehatchek walking upstairs from the basement with two rifles wrapped in his hoodie.Rehatchek left the apartment with the rifles and said he would bring them back by 10 p.m., but never returned.Police responded to the residence on Stock Street where Rehatchek was staying and spoke to him about the rifles.“He would not make eye contact with me and kept looking at the floor,” Smith noted.After Smith requested he give the rifles back, Rehatchek told him, “The guns are not here. I have to make a phone call.”Rehatchek said he made a five-minute phone call, but a check of the girlfriend's call history did not confirm his story, police said.Charges against Rehatchek include theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 27 at 1:45 p.m.
