Bears can't overcome errors

Baseball coaches constantly warn against them.

Baseball players do their best to avoid them.Because when they happen, bad things usually follow.Pleasant Valley found that out on Wednesday afternoon when it suffered a 9-6 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference loss to Liberty. What the Bears failed to avoid and couldn't overcome was errors - nine of them."The bottom line is it's hard to beat any team when you make as many fielding errors as we made today," Pleasant Valley coach Charlie Inserra said. "Especially a perennial, top of the line team like Liberty."At first, it looked as if the Bears were going to have their way with Liberty as they plated three runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Brett Hardy opened the scoring with an RBI single and Matt Konopke connected for a two-run single. However, over the next two innings, the Bears made it quite easy for the Hurricanes to overcome the deficit by committing five errors in the second inning and two in the third. The miscues produced a 6-3 lead for the Hurricanes.Over the next three innings, the Bears (2-2 overall, 2-1 EPC) calmed down a bit defensively and slowly climbed out of the hole.Leadoff hitter Matt Pierce collected a fielder's choice RBI in the fourth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bears tied the game up. Hardy got into the mix again by recording his third hit of the game and another RBI. Brent Beck delivered the game-tying RBI with a single down the left field line that scored Hardy."We were lucky to be in the game, but our kids certainly did a good job of battling back," Inserra said. "I'm certainly proud of the way they battled. But you just can't dig yourself into a hole like that."You can sometimes kind of dig yourself to the top of the hole, but you just can't quite totally get out of it - and that's what happened today with us."Instead of keeping the momentum on their side, the Bears left the Hurricanes take it right back. With extra innings on the horizon, the Hurricanes made the Bears suffer once again for their mistakes. The Hurricanes capitalized on two hit batsmen when Sam Kraihanzel drilled a two-run single,"The top of the seventh inning hurt," Inserra said. "But, in reality, we didn't play a good enough first six innings to win this game and that's the bottom line."We were mentally with it, but physically we had a really tough day. We have some things to work on for sure."CAUGHT IN A PICKLE ... Three times in the game, the Bears threw out a Liberty runner on the base paths. In the second, fifth and seventh innings, the Bears caught a Hurricanes' player in a pickle trying to advance to the next base. In two of those, the PV catcher Connor Pandolfo was involved in the rundown.LEADER OF THE PACK ... Pleasant Valley pitchers limited Liberty to only four hits. Bears' shortstop/pitcher Brett Hardy was a hit away from matching the Hurricanes' total himself. Hardy finished with three singles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Matt Konopke (two singles, two RBIs) and Connor Pandolfo (two singles, run scored) had big days in the batter's box as well.Liberty 015 000 3 - 9 4 3Pleasant Vy. 300 102 0 - 6 10 9Caledron, Gross (6) and Burcin; K.
