Victim of a series of economic disasters during recent years, Mauch Chunk, site of the world-famous Switch-Back, America's oldest railroad, is bravely fighting its way back to some measure of prosperity.

In the Alpine gorges of the "Switzerland of America," the former Civil Works Administration, now the Work Division of the Emergency Relief Administration, has released a large volume of public improvements and the attendant payroll of Carbon County's more than 3,000 workers is providing the first business activity in years.During the first 14 weeks of the CWA, ending Feb. 24, the workers drew a total of $325,950 in wages, or about $5 for every man, woman and child of the county's 63,000 population.
