Residents react to the crashes

Area residents weighed in on Facebook about three recent tractor-trailer crashes in Nesquehoning last week as a result of the Broad Mountain:

(Weatherly) Mayor Tom Connors: They need to take a picture of the truck yesterday (Thursday) and put it on a billboard on the mountain. This way the truckers that don’t want to read the signs can see the danger of driving too fast. Things need to be addressed before someone is killed.Dawn Richie: Why are these big trucks coming through this area? Awhile ago, they were being detoured in Hazleton on to Route 93, then directed on Quakake Road to 309. You sure didn’t want to meet one of them making the hairpin turn from 93 onto Quakake Road at the stop sign. I was almost hit twice. Why aren’t they using 309 and 80 and 81 like they’re supposed to?Elizabeth LaRizzio Arner: Truckers need to abide by the laws. They drive too fast. Make a complete stop at the top of the mountain. Use the off ramp. C’mon people before someone gets killed.Calvin Smith: One they need to put a sign up there that states all truckers must stop or will pay a $10,000 dollar fine. That and put a cop up there to stop it.Ileana Coss: My husband is a truck driver and says that it is a very dangerous mountain but that the driver should know what their load is like and how to use their brakes ... They are obviously overloading their brakes and therefore losing brakes cause of overheating. … I personally think trucks should not even be allowed on that road and that the runaway ramp is clearly not enough room for a mountain that steep especially … With that kind of curve. …Melissa Trently-Solt: It’s time for the cops to hide out and catch these fools. I’ve witnessed a truck driver driving recklessly on the Broad and fly right past where they are supposed to stop. Then he tried to lie so he won’t get into trouble, claiming he did stop. Luckily the guy I saw didn’t get away with it because I went to his hearing. ... My son still talks about that day because it was frightening ... Please know if you see a truck not stopping on the top of the mountain call the police immediately. …Judy Henry Veron: One of the keys to be a safe driver (car, truck, etc.) is paying attention and reading the signs simple. Especially when driving unfamiliar territory. It’s not that hard. ...Joe Berger: If people ignore signs and don’t have what it takes to drive a truck cause they weren’t taught that in school there isn’t a single thing you’re gonna do to stop this. How about comparing the last three drivers and seeing what the common factor is?
