Beaver Meadows man sent to state prison

A Beaver Meadows man was sentenced Monday in Carbon County court to a state correctional institution after previously pleading guilty in several pending cases involving thefts and burglaries.

Joseph Michael Moyer, 32, and formerly of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve a total of 16 to 36 months on charges stemming from a series of entries along Vine and Forest streets in Franklin Township. He also had pleaded to charges of driving under the influence and fleeing or attempting to elude police.Matika also sentenced him on probation/parole violations and to make restitution to the various victims totaling $3,271.47.Moyer said his crime spree began when he developed an addiction to heroin. He told Matika, "I apologize for my poor choices. I want to return to my life before my addiction." He added, "I'm sorry for my victims and for my family."Matika said the crimes Moyer committed are the type people addicted to drugs commit. They steal to get money to support their habit, the judge said. He added that Moyer's life "spiraled out of control" with his drug addiction. In addition to the prison term and the restitution, Moyer was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, have no contact with any of the victims, supply a DNA sample, render a total of 75 hours of community service when released on parole, and pay court costs of about $1,000.He was given credit of a total of 275 days already spent in jail on the various charges.Moyer's problems with the criminal justice system are not over. He will be transferred to Lehigh County prison, where he faces probation/parole violations.
