Area students compete at academic meet

"Auditory hallucinations affect which sensory perception," Palmerton team adviser Alex Knoll asked the three high school teams during the first round of the 11th Carbon County Academic Meet.

The Weatherly team buzzed in the correct answer: sound.The Weatherly Area High School hosted the annual academic meet on March 22.Teams from Palmerton, Panther Valley, Lehighton, Carbon Career & Technical Institute and Weatherly held buzzers while questions were fired at them by a panel of five judges composed of team advisers and members from the Carbon ChapterPennsylvania Association of School Retirees.Categories included everything from mythology to anatomy, poetry and sociology."We had a few practices and played lots of Trivia Crack," said CCTI team member Miranda Green.Carbon County Commissioner Thomas Gerhard made an appearance as quiz master for the championship round."This is a great event. There are lots of educated students in our area," Gerhard said. "I'm very impressed with all the talent here."Each team had four members with two alternates from its senior and junior classes for the challenge."We've had practices at least once a week, but it's not very strict," said Weatherly Senior Allyson Watkins. "We try to have fun with it."Three rounds were played, with CCTI and Palmerton advancing to the final challenge. Palmerton had the fastest buzzer and took home the engraved trophy provided by the PAIR."We just enjoy the day of being together," said coordinator Katie Leach of Weatherly.
