No. Lehigh picks up sweep in track

There will be unknowns at the beginning of every season, regardless of the sport.

Track and field is no exception, with unpredictable weather often wreaking havoc on preseason preparations for many schools in the area. But a mild winter has led to a favorable spring, and it's clear some teams have made the most of the extra time outside.Northern Lehigh had little trouble blending newcomers with established faces in Tuesday's Colonial League season-opener, as both the boys and girls swept Catasauqua and Pen Argyl. The Northern Lehigh boys topped Pen Argyl 88-62 and cruised past Catasauqua 139-7. The Lady Bulldogs downed the Green Knights 83-66 and dispatched the Rough Riders 88-57."We had a solid performance today," Northern Lehigh head coach Mike Lehtonen said. "We're going to go against some tough teams in Bangor and Northwestern coming up (next week) but it was a solid performance."We're a young team, so we're looking to get better. In some ways, we're trying to find events that work for our kids, too, so that's kind of been a learning experience just trying to find ways to see where kids fit and what their best events are."An area of strength for the Bulldogs in recent years has been in the distance events, highlighted by Gavin Kemery's back-to-back trips to the PIAA Championships in the 3200 the past two seasons.Kemery appeared to be in midseason form Tuesday, winning the 1600 (5:01.5), 3200 (10:23.6) and helping the 3200 relay team, which also included Gage Christ, TJ Dooley and Preston Kemery, taking first with a time of 9:34.7."It feels good. Today was a very productive day," said Kemery. "I felt like for the first official meet of the season. … I'm in a decent spot with my times."I feel good. Today was mostly about going out there and getting the feel for it as I kind of ease back into it throughout the rest of the season."While Kemery did his part in the 1600 and 3200, fellow senior Dooley was equally dominant in winning the 400 (54.4) and 800 (2:24.3). Dooley and Kemery paced a Northern Lehigh attack that claimed the first four spots in the 800, 1600 and 3200."Today was great. I felt like we really came out and competed today," said Dooley. "Especially our distance runners; we want to show that we can match up with anyone out there."Senior Conrad Bevans was also a multiple event winner for the Bulldogs, claiming the discus (125-5) and shot put (39-2.5). Hasan Mujovic (300 hurdles, 45.6) and Nick Miller (pole vault, 9-6) were also victorious for the Northern Lehigh boys. While the boys' team got impressive performances from several of its upperclassmen, a mix of youth and experience led the Lady Bulldogs.Katie Guelcher took both the 800 (2:48.4) and 1600 (6:26.4), wins that came as a bit of a surprise to the Northern Lehigh freshman."It was awesome," Guelcher said afterward. "As a freshman, in my first meet, I wasn't expecting to win. But it was such a good feeling."I knew that I could be a good runner because of doing cross country (in the fall) so that helps out with that. But I don't think I was expecting to win anything in my first meet; that was pretty cool."Guelcher, who edged Catty's Madison Emery in both the 800 (2:48.7) and 1600 (6:29.9), impressed Lehtonen with her grit."She had a couple of good races, and they were competitive races at the end," the coach said. "They both came down to the last 100 meters and that showed some guts to come out on top in both of those races. She really had to dig deep to make it happen."Sophomore Jill Olewine also had a solid day for Northern Lehigh, taking first in the triple jump (31-1.25), in addition to placing second in both the long jump (15-1.5) and 300 hurdles (55.5)."I'm very happy with how I did," said Olewine. "I had a PR (personal record) in the triple jump and it's my first year doing it so I was really happy with that."I was a little shaky on it and wasn't really sure what was going to happen. But at our scrimmage, I was around 30 feet, so I was aiming for 31 (feet) and trying to expect it, but I was just so happy that's what I got."Other winners for the Lady Bulldogs were Micheala Rex (javelin, 87-7) and Darby Pender (300 hurdles, 54.4).BOYSNo. Lehigh 88, Pen Argyl 62No. Lehigh 139, Catasauqua 7100- 1.
