Mahoning makes multiple drug arrests

Multiple arrests were made and felony warrants issued after Mahoning Township police witnessed a Lansford woman injecting herself with heroin in front of an infant in the Walmart parking lot on Feb. 22.

Kayla Leibowitz, 27, faces charges of two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a news release issued Tuesday.The investigation began after Officer Tyler Meek witnessed a retail theft at the store.Two of the people involved in the incident had active warrants for their arrest.Jonathan O'Gurek, 21, of Palmerton, was wanted by the Carbon County Sheriff's Office.Jamie Stevens, 35, of Summit Hill was wanted by the Schuylkill County Sheriff's Office.As a result of the investigation, police impounded two vehicles, and seized a syringe, marijuana, digital scale; metal case containing over 100 empty wax packets, rubber bands and a razor, torn wax packets, four packets containing heroin and a fraudulent state inspection sticker.Leibowitz told police she was contacted by William Derau, 41, of Palmerton, and Stevens, who asked her to return a few items in exchange for a "few bucks or bags."Stevens took numerous shopping bags from inside the store and put items from the vehicle into the bags."Leibowitz took the bags into the store and returned the items in exchange for a $108.16 gift card," according to the affidavit.A blue car entered the parking lot and Derau gave the gift card to its occupants, O'Gurek and Josh Gross, in exchange for six bags of heroin.Derau and Stevens gave Leibowitz one of the bags, which she used with a baby sitting next to her, according to her statement to police.Subsequently, Derau went into Walmart, picked up several items and left the store without paying.Meek stopped Derau's vehicle at the exit of Walmart and Derau admitted to stealing the items.Lehighton police detained O'Gurek.Criminal charges have been filed against Derau for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, retail theft, criminal conspiracy-retail theft, driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, required financial responsibility, operation following suspension of registration, violations of certificate of inspection, operation of vehicle without an official certificate of inspection, and altered, forged, or counterfeit documents or plates.Stevens faces charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering welfare of children, retail theft, and criminal conspiracy-retail theft.Felony warrants have been issued for Gross and O'Gurek.Gross, 21, of Palmerton, faces charges of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, criminal conspiracy-possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.O'Gurek faces charges of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, criminal conspiracy-possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, criminal use of a communication facility, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
