County committed to CCEDC

Carbon County is committed to the goals of the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation.

On Thursday, the county commissioners entered into an agreement with CCEDC to provide economic development assistance services to the county from April 1 through Dec. 31, 2019.Commissioner William O'Gurek said that the action "represents our commitment and contributions" to CCEDC, noting that the county will help the corporation fund their activities, much like it did when it had a county economic development office. The goal of CCEDC is to help attract business into the county, as well as showcase businesses rooted in the community. In 2013, the Carbon County Office of Economic Development, Carbon County Chamber of Commerce, Carbon County Industrial Development Authority and Carbon County Economic Development Corporation merged to create the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation. Four years earlier, officials learned from the state that the county could not be the organization to find lending sources for area businesses. After the newly formed corporation was formed, it opened an office on South Street in Lehighton and has since grown in membership and has helped a countless number of businesses through low-interest loans and other services. In addition, the chamber side of CCEDC hosts numerous events annually to promote tourism and businesses in the region and partners with the Greater Lehigh Valley to broaden its reach. In other matters, commissioners:• Approved a proposal from Mission Critical Partners of Port Matilda to aid the county in preparing an invitation to bid for a radio maintenance contract. The cost for the service is $9,380.• Approved a continuity of operations plan with Lehighton to identify the Lehighton Recreation Center as an alternative site for court operations on a short-term emergency basis.• Approved the resignation of James C. Hauser Sr. of Lehighton as deputy coroner, effective March 31.• Approved the change of status for Kelsey K. McElvar of Lehighton from county caseworker I to county caseworker II in Children and Youth Services, effective March 30.• Approved the court appointment of Briana L. Foster of Kunkletown as an adult probation officer I in the adult probation office, effective March 30.• Approved the prison appointments of Colby S. Chew of Lansford, Alec S. DeLong of New Tripoli and Jose L. Ortiz of Lehighton as part-time corrections officers at the prison, effective April 4.
