Carbon County court - DUI

Five defendants who previously pleaded guilty to driving under the influence were sentenced on Monday in Carbon County court.

Judge Joseph J. Matika imposed sentences on the following:Jesse James Naimon, 28, of Albrightsville, and formerly of Kunkletown, was sentenced to serve one to five years for his third DUI conviction. He was arrested on March 14, 2015, by state police at Fern Ridge along Route 903 in Kidder Township. A test showed 0.20 BAC. On a charge of driving under suspension-DUI related he was sentenced to serve 45 to 90 days, but must serve the entire 90 days, concurrent with the DUI count.On the DUI charge he was also ordered to pay a fine of $2,500, license suspended for 18 months, render 100 hours of community service when released on parole, and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use. On the suspension count he was fined $1,000 and will receive another year license suspension.He was given credit for 94 days spent in prison on the charges, meaning he is paroled on the suspension count.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. April 15 and was granted immediate work release privileges.Johnny Stephen Schafer,27, of Lehighton, was sentenced on two DUI charges to serve a total of 30 days in jail followed by 59 months in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program with the first 63 days on electronic monitoring. He must also render a total of 100 hours of community service, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, license suspended on one count for a year and the second count for 18 months, consecutive.He was arrested on April 12, 2015, by Mahoning Township police along Mahoning Mountain Road. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. The second arrest occurred on June 20, 2015, along the same road. He refused a blood test.He will begin the jail term at 11 a.m. April 1. He was granted immediate work release privileges.Aaron Hunter Kopeinig,37, of Stroudsburg, and formerly of Kunkletown, was sentenced in two cases of DUI. He was placed on probation for six months on the first count and ordered to pay a fine of $300. On the second count he was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $500 and one-year license suspension. He was also ordered to render a total of 50 hours of community service and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.He will being the jail term at 10 a.m. April 19.Johnny Maximiliano Gomez,22, of Hazle Township, was sentenced to serve 90 days to 60 months in jail, a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months, zero tolerance on drug and alcohol use, and render 100 hours of community service. He was arrested by state police at Fern Ridge along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township.He began the prison term immediately.Michael Curtis Bowman,32, of Tamaqua, was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service. He was arrested by Lansford police.Matika said his sentence is consecutive with one he is currently serving in Schuylkill County.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
