Schuylkill Scholar-Athlete banquet Sunday
The 55th annual Schuylkill County Scholar Athlete Banquet will be held Sunday, April 3, at 5 p.m., at Hillcrest Catering Hall, Minersville.
Fourteen scholar athletes from throughout Schuylkill, Carbon and Dauphin Counties will be honored by the Schuylkill Chapter No. 25 of the National Football and College Football Hall of Fame.The student/athletes and their high schools are, Christian Puzzi, Blue Mountain; Nolan Fegley, Mahanoy Area; Peter Dubravski, Marian; Jonathan McBreen, Minersville; Travis Steele, Nativity; Patrick Gownley, North Schuylkill; Nathan Miller, Panther Valley; Geoffrey Kaufman, Pine Grove; Kolby Kleckner, Pottsville; Nicholas Kerschner, Schuylkill Haven; Ian McCole, Shenandoah Valley; Jacob Marcolla, Tamaqua; Jaden Buchanan, Tri-Valley; Nicholas Rodichok, Williams Valley.Following are the biographies of the local scholar athletes:Peter Angelo Dubravski- MarianA 6-0, 280-pound offensive and defensive lineman, Dubravski was a three-year starter for the Colts and played a key role in his team's 2015 march to the District 11 Class A championship. Considered one of his team's hardest workers, Dubravski accumulated 103 solo tackles and netted 16 "pancake" blocks during his career at Marian Catholic. Dubravski was awarded the prestigious Burlsworth Award for his efforts during the 2015 season and has also been a three-year member of the Colts' track and field team. Dubravski is active in the Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council, the Green Club, PA Math League, guitar club and serves as a peer listener. He also volunteered with the Lake Harmony Watershed Preservation Group by cleaning storm drains, moved stones to assist with storm water damage and helped various group members with storm water-related projects. A distinguished honor roll student, Dubravski is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. He is ranked in the top two percent of his 85-member class and has completed advanced placement courses in calculus and English. He has been awarded a Dean's Scholarship at Dickinson College. The son of Angelo and Kerry Dubravski of Albrightsville, he will attend Dickinson College to major in biology.Nathan Miller - Panther ValleyA 5-10, 160-pound tight end, fullback and defensive back, Miller served as team captain his junior and senior years for the Panthers, and was a two-year starter. He accumulated 99 tackles during his senior season, intercepted four passes and recovered three fumbles for Panther Valley. He was named to a number of all-star football teams compiled by local media outlets, including the Times News all-area team as a defensive back. He also made the Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association team. He was also a two-year starter on the Panther Valley basketball team. A member of the distinguished honor roll, Miller ranks first in a class of 72 students and has completed advanced placement courses in calculus and English. He is a member of the National Honor Society, where he has served as vice president and has taken part on the scholastic scrimmage team. Miller is a member of the prom committee, student leadership, recycling club and harmony scholars. He has volunteered for the Toys for Tots program at Salem Bible Fellowship Church in Lehighton, along with Meed's Methodist Church food pantries, the Panther Valley youth basketball and football camps and the Carbon County Senior Games. The son of Josh Miller and Kristin Kosalko of Summit Hill, Miller will attend Penn State University to major in risk management.Jacob C. Marcolla - TamaquaA 6-1, 215-pound offensive tackle, Marcolla was considered tough and tenacious on the field. He was a two-year starter and letter winner for the Blue Raiders, and was honored with the Thomas Butterworth Memorial Scholarship. He also participated in the SCFCA Senior All-Star game in November. His extracurricular activities include membership in the biology, chemistry and physics clubs, the world language club, the science olympiad and the Honor Card Review Committee. Marcolla has taken part in the American Cancer Society Chinese Auction, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Meals on Wheels, Tamaqua Elementary field day, Tamaqua Area High School mini-thon, and is a member of the Hometown Volunteer Fire Company. An honors student who ranks third in a class of 176 students, Marcolla has completed advanced placement courses in physics I, physics II, calculus and Spanish IV. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Science, Math, English and Spanish National Honor Societies. The son of Christopher and Christine Marcolla of Andreas, he will attend either Penn State University or Wilkes University to major in mechanical engineering.
