Palmerton woman led police on Turnpike chase
State police have identified a Palmerton woman as the driver in a high-speed chase on the PA Turnpike’s Northeast Extension Saturday evening.
Alicia M. Cardano, 21, allegedly fled police at speeds exceeding 100 mph before crashing her vehicle as she attempted to exit at the Mahoning Valley Interchange.The chase began around 8:20 p.m. Saturday, when a trooper clocked a vehicle going 88 mph on the northbound Northeast Extension near the Allentown Service Plaza.The vehicle was identified as a silver 1999 Chrysler sedan.Troopers pursued the vehicle with their lights and sirens on, and identified the vehicle from its plate number. A trooper reportedly attempted to use “stop sticks” to deflate the tires, without success.After the driver accelerated to speeds of over 100 mph and failed to yield to the troopers, they called off the pursuit out of concern for the safety of other drivers on the Turnpike, the release said.At 8:40, a crash was reported at the Mahoning Valley Interchange of the Northeast Extension, on the ramp from the northbound side. Police found the vehicle involved in the pursuit had overturned and crashed, blocking the exit ramp.They identified the driver as Cardano. She was transported to Palmerton Hospital for treatment of injuries and released.Officials from State Police at Pocono, as well as Bowmanstown and East Penn Township Fire Companies assisted at the scene. The vehicle was removed and the ramp was reopened shortly after.In a news release put out on Monday, Troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police Turnpike Unit said that charges of fleeing and eluding a police officer are pending against Cardano. No further details on the charges were available Monday evening.
