Man gets prison in assault with club

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Monday for assaulting another man with a wooden club.

Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced Izael Flores, 19, of Nesquehoning to serve 12 to 24 months in a state correctional institution on a charge of aggravated assault. Flores previously pleaded guilty to the charge.Flores will serve more time in the state system after the court revoked his probation/parole in previous cases on a petition filed by the adult probation office. Matika resentenced him on the violations to serve an additional seven to 12 months, meaning his total sentence is 19 to 36 months.Flores was arrested by Nesquehoning police for an incident on Nov. 20, 2015, in the 200 block of East Center Street. Police said Flores struck Patrick Conklin with a wooden club, breaking his arm.Defense Attorney Adam R. Weaver, court appointed, said his client made a "bone head decision" to hit the victim with the club.Flores said he wanted to go to the state system to get help and for educational purposes. After the incident Flores was denied further attendance at Panther Valley High School.He told Matika, "I'm all about the education. I like to get up state for education."He said the state system offers educational programs that he believes will benefit him.Matika told Flores with his juvenile record, in which he had been placed in juvenile facilities, one of which he ran from, he faces the possibility of state prison every time he's convicted of a crime. Matika also noted that Flores has a history of mental health issues.In addition to the jail term Matika ordered Flores to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, attend anger management counseling, supply a DNA sample, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000 and have no contact with Conklin.He was given credit for 125 days already spent in prison of the charge.
