Summit Hill and Parryville are the latest municipalities to issue burn bans in Carbon County.
On Wednesday, Summit Hill Fire Chief Shawn Hoben issued a burn ban for the borough until further notice.Parryville Fire Chief James Bonser also announced that the borough is issuing a burn ban until further notice.Other municipalities currently under a burn ban include Mahoning Township, Penn Forest Township, Jim Thorpe and Nesquehoning.Nesquehoning Borough Council, on Wednesday, voted to extend the burn ban that was put in place on March 8 until April 21.A burn ban means that burning of any kind is prohibited at this time, including in burn barrels, fire pits, chimineas and any other types of fire containers.Residents found burning during a burn ban can and will be cited by law enforcement.Summit Hill also reminds smokers in all municipalities to take extra precautions when smoking outdoors."A flick of a cigarette can cause brush fires too," the borough Facebook page states. With a mild winter season, forests are ripe with drier materials that can easily catch fire.Fire crews have responded to multiple brush fires throughout the region over the last few weeks already and last year, Carbon County held the record for the two largest brush fires in the state, claiming a combined 1,500 acres of forest on the Blue Mountain in East Penn Township and near Jack Frost Ski Area in Kidder Township.
