Funding critical for schools
Area school superintendents were relieved Wednesday at the news that Gov. Tom Wolf would not veto the budget that would free up funds for schools.
Tamaqua Area School District Superintendent Carol Makuta weighed in with her thoughts."I was pleased to hear that an education budget for fiscal year 2015-2016 will become law on March 27, and that the current crisis has come to an end," Makuta said."This announcement came at a critical time, as many districts in the commonwealth were nearing the end of their financial options."Makuta said it remains to be seen how the money will be pushed out to the districts throughout the commonwealth."As the governor decides to distribute the available funding, it's important that all school entities have enough funding and resources to remain open through the end of the school year," she said. "It is also important that school districts are not forced into a similar financial crisis in future years."Jim Thorpe School District Superintendent Brian Gasper said he couldn't speak for his business manager as to how the passage would affect the district's budget right now. But he said there is a general feeling of relief in the district."We are all ecstatic, the remaining funds will be released here, and then it is on to the '16-17 budget. We're glad we don't have to consider cutting programs and closing doors," Gasper said.Panther Valley is part of a group of school districts currently in a legal battle against the state to get more funding for schools. The lawsuit, which is headed for the state Supreme Court, argues that the Legislature should adopt the findings of a Basic Education Funding Commission, which was created by the Legislature.Panther Valley Superintendent Dennis Kergick said that it will allow the school to avoid having to borrow money to cover its budgetary requirements this year."This means that basic education funding dollars will flow to districts as soon as possible, relieving districts from much of the financial chaos they are now facing. What we are not sure about yet is how the BEF dollars will be distributed to school districts in the absence of an approved fiscal code bill," Kergick said.
