Summit Hill native is top physician teacher in PA

A Summit Hill native who is on the staff of the Temple University Hospital has been named Pennsylvania's top physician teacher by the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. David T. O'Gurek,associate professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple, and a family physician at the university hospital, received the "2016 Family Exemplary Teacher of the Year" at the PAFP's annual business meeting on March 11 in Pittsburgh.He was recommended for the honor by colleagues and students.A son of David and Patrice (Kocha) O'Gurek of Summit Hill, he joined Temple in 2013 and currently directs its Family Medicine Clerkship program and is a faculty member of Temple's Family Medicine Interest Group.O'Gurek is a graduate of Marian High School in Hometown, and earned a bachelor of science degree from St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia. He earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine in Hersheyand completed his family medicine residence at Lancaster General Health System, serving as chief resident during his third year.Following his residence, he served as associate director of the health system's Family Medicine Residency Program and was a clinical assistant professor at the Penn State College of Medicine.A member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, O'Gurek sits on its Commission on Health of the Public and Science.He also serves as chairman of the PAFP's Legal and Government Affairs Commission and is chairman of the Primary Care-Public Health Integration Work Group.At Temple, he practices adult inpatient and full spectrum outpatient care in Family Medicine, and runs a program for patients struggling with opioid dependence.
